Controlled Substance Schedule

Under the Controlled Substance Act (CSA), a substance falls into one of five schedules, depending on how addictive it is.

In addition, drugs are grouped into five classes:

  1. Narcotics: Primarily includes opiates
  2. Depressants: Used to relieve tension, address sleep issues, and provide sedation; have effects on the central nervous system
  3. Stimulants: Used for weight loss, attention deficit disorders, narcolepsy. Users can experience a state of euphoria which is highly addictive
  4. Anabolic Steroids: High potential for abuse
  5. Hallucinogens: Drugs that have the potential to alter the mind

The DEA also monitors the growth, sale, and use of Cannabis sativa, or marijuana.
